Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I use 8x8?

8x8 is a cloud-based Voice over Internet Protocol phone system provider. It can be used through any modern browser, or through a software phone on your computer or mobile device, including apps for iOS and Android.

What is the price of 8x8?

As of this review, 8x8 does not publish pricing. 8x8 offers five service tiers: X2, X4, X6, X7, and x8. For traditional VOIP functions, X2 or X4 should suffice. The upper plans include call center-type features.

Does 8x8 integrate with my Law Practice Management Software?

At the time of this review, 8x8 does not integrate with any law practice management software. However, it does integrate with Zapier, although it only has SMS-related triggers.

Is 8x8 secure enough for my law firm?

Although 8x8 does not offer end-to-end encryption for phone calls, it does have a high standard of security. Video meetings can be encrypted end-to-end, if the firm enables that feature. Most lawyers will find that this is enough for their purposes. However, unencrypted SMS should never be used to transfer sensitive or confidential information.

Can I use 8x8 from my mobile phone?

Yes. 8x8 offers a soft phone and a mobile phone app so you can use the platform from your computer or your smartphone.

Does 8x8 have video capabilities?

Yes. 8x8 offers video conferencing services. Although it may not be as convenient as some platforms, they offer end-to-end encryption as an option, so you know your client video meeting communications are secure.

Is 8x8 easy to setup?

Yes, 8x8 is relatively uncomplicated, as there is no hardware to install or setup.

Does 8x8 integrate with Zapier?

Yes, it does. Although the integration may leave much to be desired from those who are looking to log calls into their law practice management software.

Does 8x8 have business text?

Yes. They offer SMS business texting.

Is 8x8 good for solos?

Yes. 8x8 would be good for solos. It is relatively easy to setup and can be used and accessed from your mobile phone. It lacks integrations, though, which may be a deal killer for firms with more complex legal tech stacks.

Additional Details about 8x8

8×8 Pricing

8×8 offers competitive tiers to meet the VOIP needs of everyone from a solo attorney to a high-volume price with call center-level needs. Even with the “base” X2 tier, you get pretty much everything the other tiers have (video conferencing and business phone), including VoIP fax. Upgrading one level to X4 adds supervisor and call activity analytics. Moving beyond X4 gets into contact center features that may add value for larger firms or high-volume practices who also have the staff to handle that many calls.

Most law firms considering 8×8 should limit their comparisons to X2 and X4, and probably choose X2. The significant additional features X4 adds (unlimited calls to 34 more countries than X2, supervisor monitoring, and supervisor analytics) are likely unnecessary. However, some firms may want the third differentiator: receptionist and operator controls.

And you can mix and match plan types. So, if the firm needs a single receptionist, 8×8 permits a firm to have many X2 users and a single X4 user. Business Text

Unlike the other solutions in this Portal, 8×8 does not offer Business Text messaging. It is something that you will have to add-on using their API. However, even when you do this, the SMS will only send outbound messages. If you need to communicate with your clients via text message, you will likely need to get another solution as well.

Who 8x8 is for

8×8 is a solution built more for medium-sized to large law firms. Although any sized firm could use them, their real benefit comes from taking advantage of their entire suite of solutions.8×8 is a solution built more for medium-sized to large law firms. Although any sized firm could use them, their real benefit comes from taking advantage of their entire suite of solutions.

Law firms looking to replace their current Private Branch Exchange (PBX) systems will find the functionality they need in 8×8, including interoffice messaging and video conferencing solutions.

However, this all comes at a price and may be redundant for some. Smaller firms or solo practitioners who already have much of this functionality, may not benefit from these comprehensive solutions.

Ultimately, 8×8 is a full-featured VOIP provider that can easily grow with you as your firm expands. The fact that even its entry-level subscription includes nearly all the tools you’d want makes it very attractive. However, those looking for a direct integration between an LPMS and VOIP system should look elsewhere.
