Chrometa is a passive time tracker that works on Macs, PCs, and mobile devices. It automatically tracks what application you’re using, what file you’re in, or what website you are visiting. It does not handle billing, but you can export your time to practice management or billing programs.
No need to set a timer. Chrometa doesn’t work like most timekeeping software. Rather than having you set up clients and turn on timers, it just tracks what you are doing all day every day. It keeps track of what application you’re working in and other data that can help you bill at the end of the day. When you’re in a client file, Chrometa will time how long you’re in the file and capture the file name. If you’re on a website, Chrometa logs the URL and title of the page. If you switch from one task to another, it stops tracking what you were doing and starts tracking whatever open tab or application you’re currently using. It automatically creates a timesheet from all your captured tasks.
Email time-tracking. Chrometa has plugins for Outlook, Apple Mail, and Gmail so that email time gets automatically tracked as well. It will log the subject line of each email along with the to/from/cc lines and the time you spend on each email.
Mobile time-tracking. With Chrometa’s Android and iOS apps, you can capture phone calls and text messages.
Chrometa offers three different pricing plans:
- $12/month for one time-tracking device (such as one computer).
- $19/month for two time tracking devices (such as one computer and one smartphone).
- $29/month for up to four time tracking devices.
If you’re not sure if these plans are right for you, Chrometa also offers different solo and team plans, each starting at $19/month/user for up to 6 connecting tracking devices.
To make sure it’s the right for you, Chrometa offers a 30-day free trial for you to give them a try.

Things You Might Want To Know
Migration. There’s no way to import data into Chrometa, which makes sense because the passive time-tracking model couldn’t really accommodate pre-existing data. You can export your Chrometa data to an Excel spreadsheet.
Security. Chrometa performs daily backups and stores a local backup on your computer as well. It uses 128-bit security to encrypt your data. Your data will also be archived after 18 months.
Team tracking. Chrometa can automatically track what each team member is working on and for how long they worked on a matter or project. You’ll also be able to assign time to clients and matters.
Apps and integrations. Chrometa has both Android and iOS apps and plugins for Microsoft Outlook, Gmail, and Apple Mail. It also integrates with several law practice management software programs, including PCLaw, Rocket Matter, Clio, and CosmoLex. For billing and accounting, it works with FreshBooks, Xero, and QuickBooks.
Who Chrometa is For
Chrometa is a good choice for attorneys who multitask but who don’t want to be bothered with having to set new timers every few moments. It is also a good choice for someone that doesn’t mind keeping separate billing software. However, if you are a person whose multitasking also includes non-work tasks, you may find it a bit tedious to have to edit or remove those entries.
