LegalMatch is a lawyer directory that matches consumers with lawyers in a number of common legal areas, including family law, criminal law, real estate, bankruptcy, personal injury, immigration, and intellectual property. Lawyers pay a fee to be listed in the directory and become a member of the site, while the search is free to prospective clients.
SEO-driven marketing. Much of lawyer advertising requires attorneys to spend time assessing which keywords are the most searched, which advertising channels are likely to provide the greatest return on investment, and more. LegalMatch helps take care of that for member attorneys by geographically targeting their advertising efforts, leveraging paid search and affiliate marketing, and optimizing content for search engines.
Case intake. Consumers present their case to LegalMatch, and they do some of the initial intake work for you. They have intake questionnaires, tailored to each legal category, that are designed to capture essential information and narrow down the consumer’s question to a specific practice area. LegalMatch then sends an email notification to directory members in the practice area and location that the potential client specified. From the dashboard, you’re able to quickly see if the case falls within your practice area and geographic location. You can then quickly review the cases and decide which ones warrant a response.
Client-centric. Much of how LegalMatch is structured towards how to best help clients. It also has a helpful Legal Center library that also includes links to a legal dictionary, legal blogs, a law library with articles on different legal topics for laypersons, and legal tips, like on how to select a lawyer.
LegalMatch charges a monthly fee but does not make membership pricing publicly available. You can learn more about cost by contacting them directly.
Things You Might Want to Know
Nontraditional directory. LegalMatch isn’t a traditional lawyer directory or referral service where it is free or near-free to get listed. Member attorneys need to pay a monthly fee and be able to respond quickly to potential clients, as they may be racing against the response time of a different competing attorney.
Membership pricing only. LegalMatch only charges a monthly membership fee for its services, and does not take a percentage of any fee you earn. It’s also important to note that LegalMatch only connects you with potential clients. It does not promise business and it’s largely up to the attorneys to sign and retain clients from LegalMatch. If you’re not interested in paying to find clients, you might want to check out SimpleLaw, which provides a similar service and requires payment only when you have an active matter on its platform.
Mixed reactions. Even a quick Google search online shows that people, clients and attorneys alike, have had experiences ranging from amazing to horrible with LegalMatch. With LegalMatch’s vetting and membership prices behind closed doors, plus the range of experiences attorneys have had with this service, it’s best to conduct your due diligence before being listed on LegalMatch’s directory to make sure it’s a good fit for your practice and the direction you want to take it.
Who LegalMatch Is For
This directory is for Solo or small firm lawyers who are looking to build a book of business but don’t have the personnel and time for intake will find LegalMatch’s limited pre-screening of cases useful. Similarly, attorneys that lack the resources for significant market research or extensive advertising can take advantage of this company’s economy of scale and potentially reach far more clients than they could on their own. Well-established attorneys that are able to engage in advertising and spend time on intake will likely not find the LegalMatch service as valuable.
