Essentials is the cloud-based CRM built for small businesses by CRM juggernaut and Wall Street darling, Salesforce. It only supports up to 10 users at a time and boasts simplified CRM setup and training so you can hit the ground running.

Salesforce Essentials Highlights

Trailhead. Trailhead is Salesforce’s “free, gamified online learning platform” that helps you learn how to use Salesforce Essentials in no time. It also offers other “games” to learn about topics like API basics, organizing your data with Essentials, and a host of others. They’ve made onboarding and other troubleshooting issues a breeze, and their smart gamification gives you a fun and efficient way to become a Salesforce power user.

Einstein Activity Capture. This feature in Sales Cloud Essentials connects to Gmail and Office 365 to automatically sync client email contact to your Salesforce platform, quickly and easily capturing your history of communications and interactions. Einstein Activity Capture also automatically adds and syncs events and messages into calendars and its “Activity Timeline,” where your CRM will analyze your data stream using machine learning algorithms to give you insights about your interactions with contacts, leads, and clients.

Built to scale. Because Salesforce Essentials is built on Salesforce proper, it is made to scale with your business. You can upgrade your subscription package easily, of course, and purchase apps through the AppExchange to help you work more efficiently.

Salesforce Essentials Pricing

Salesforce Essentials is $25/user/month when billed annually or $30/user if you’re paying monthly. You can upgrade your package with different add-ons (client service or marketing, for example) for an additional $25/user/month.

Salesforce gives you a 14-day free trial so you can test drive Essentials and explore whether it is a good fit for your firm.

Things You Might Want To Know

G Suite. Leaning on its Google partnership, Salesforce gives you three free months of G Suite when you sign up.

Lightning Apps. Lightning Apps are a collection of tabs and apps within Salesforce that work together for a particular function. In other words, Salesforce has built customizable layouts for custom interfaces that allow you to view your data and do everything you need from a single page. Salesforce differentiates these “Lightning Apps” from its Connected Apps, which are usually third-party applications that integrate with Salesforce and may not integrate quite so seamlessly with your workflow.

Integrations. Speaking of integrations, Salesforce Essentials offers a host of them. You can count on software and applications like G Suite, Slack, QuickBooks, LinkedIn, DocuSign, HelloSign, and DropBox. Salesforce also parades its open API so you can integrate other software, like your favorite law practice management software, into Salesforce Essentials.

Who Salesforce Essentials Is For

With its reasonable price and powerful features, Salesforce Essentials has given Salesforce its portal into the small business marketplace. Undoubtedly, that includes solo and small-firm lawyers who are interested in accessing one of the largest and most robust CRMs known to humankind. SalesForce Essentials may not be all things to all businesses, though. It knocks the CRM functionality out of the park, but it doesn’t offer automated workflows, the ability to send quotes and invoices, or some other features that can make your life better.

Salesforce uses “Lightning Apps” and a glossary full of other Salesforcey lingo that demands you familiarize yourself with Salesforce’s language and culture to get the most from it. To be clear, Salesforce Essentials is a powerful CRM that can scale with you. But it is critical that you take advantage of the free trial and review the Trailblazer videos to make sure it’s the right CRM for your practice.
