CoCounsel by Casetext, owned by Thompson Reuters, is a legal-market focused AI tool that assists with document review, deposition work, contract analysis, and timeline creation. CoCounsel is built upon Open AI’s GPT models (the same technology powering ChatGPT), but rather than general-purpose chat, those GPT powers are trained on case law and other legal materials, and harnessed in aid of legal professionals.

Where does CoCounsel get it's information?

CoCounsel's document analysis work is begins with your uploaded documents combined with CoCounsel's generative AI models. Case law research, part of Westlaw Precision, comes from the Westlaw system.

Does CoCounsel search caselaw?

Case law research requires a subscription to Westlaw Precision. CoCounsel Core does not search case law.

What secondary sources does CoCounsel have?

CoCounsel accesses the Casetext Research database. This databases comprises "articles, commentary, client alerts, and other analyses from specialists at top law firms."

CoCounsel offers several useful legal-market targeted skills:

Document Review

Provide CoCounsel with a document or set of documents. It will “read” them and then you can ask the AI questions about the document(s). Questions could range from a simple word processor “find” function to much more “analysis-based” questions. Every answer the AI provides contains a cite to the material upon which it based its response. For example, CoCounsel could be queried about a contract a client has with a third party. CoCounsel could extract the contract’s terms, dates, dollar amounts, and more. Having CoCounsel produce this makes it quick to learn the relevant provisions and whether the client or third party complied with the contract terms.

Deposition Prep

Provide CoCounsel with the prospective deponent’s name and issues in the case. CoCounsel then creates an outline of topics you should address in the deposition along with proposed questions for each topic it lists.

Database Search Tool

Like several other AI products, you can point CoCounsel to a set of documents and ask it to “read” them. When its analysis finishes, you can then ask it questions about the documents. If database searching sounds similar to “Document Review” above, that’s because it is. But CoCounsel isn’t limited to legal document review. You could point CoCounsel at your firm’s operations manual, knowledge base, or entire client file repository.
