Quicken Home and Business Highlights

Desktop only. Quicken Home and Business is an on-premise accounting software program made for Windows users. It is not cloud-based, so you are restricted to using it on your desktop or laptop.

Track both home and business transactions. You can build multiple customized dashboards so you can keep track of anything you need with just a few clicks. Connect your bank accounts and import all bank transactions through Quicken’s secure portal. Stay on top of expenses and income by categorizing all business and home expenses, which may be useful if you are a solo lawyer who needs to be able to keep track of home and business transactions all in one program.

Bill reminders. Keep track of bills with Quicken Home & Business by setting up reminders that include due date and amount. You can also set an alert frequency and add reminders to your Outlook calendar.

Taxes. You are able to prepare taxes with Quicken Home and Business, as the software can identify and separate tax deductions as well as run reports that may be useful during tax season.

Reports. Quicken includes reports for profit and loss statements, cash flow, unpaid invoices, and reports on accounts payable and accounts receivable. Although you can track business and home finances in one place with Quicken, you can’t run full sole proprietor reports that total all finances.

Things You Might Want To Know

Security. Quicken Home and Business uses both 128-bit and 256-bit encryption to protect data.

Migration. You can import security price data into Quicken via a CSV file, but Quicken cannot import any other data via that method. You can import tax data from TurboTax. Otherwise, Quicken seems limited to importing data from other versions of Quicken.

Apps and Integration. Quicken has mobile apps for both iOS and Android. However, since Quicken Home and Business is desktop-based, the app must be two-way synced with your laptop or desktop.

Who Quicken Home and Business Is For

Quicken Home and Business is a good fit for firms looking for an on-premise solution to accounting. It’s also great for solos who want to track home and business expenses all in one place. However, it’s probably not a good fit for firms who are looking for cloud-based business accounting software that they can access from anywhere.

Clunky compared to other software in the sector

Hadn’t used this since the mid-nineties, but had to for an organization I volunteer for. Compared to the robust reporting nature of Quickbooks, this is like doing accounting with both hands tied behind your back. You know you should be able to do the thing, and yet you can’t. This is not to say QB is perfect, but this is like a long forgotten cousin who lives on another planet.

Quicken feels out of date for current small businesses

Quicken made great software in the 80s and 90s, but it feels out of date to use install-software in 2017.
