In this episode with Matthew Dicks, we talk about storytelling, and why it’s an important skill to learn in business. Matthew shares tips for better storytelling, how to approach storytelling as a lawyer, and how it can help lawyers teach witnesses how to tell better stories on the stand.

Matthew Dicks has been an elementary school teacher for the last 21 years in West Hartford, Connecticut. He’s also a columnist, contributor, playwright, life coach, a personal productivity consultant, DJ, minister, stand up comic, and writer with four published novels, one book of nonfiction, and another novel on the way in November.

But Matthew is also a storyteller. He is a 40-time Moth StorySLAM champion and 6-time GrandSLAM champion. He and his wife also run Speak Up, a Hartford-based storytelling organization that produced storytelling shows in Connecticut and throughout New England. They also co-host a podcast called Speak Up Storytelling, which seeks to teach storytelling to listeners.

Matthew’s favorite quote is this:

“Don’t say you don’t have enough time. You have exactly the same number of hours per day that were given to Helen Keller, Pasteur, Michelangelo, Mother Teresa, Leonardo da Vinci, Thomas Jefferson, and Albert Einstein.”

Show Notes

If you want to be someone who changes minds in any way, one must-read book Matthew recommends is Made to Stick by Chip and Dan Heath.

One project Matthew is currently working on is a novel written entirely in list form. List after list after list that tells the story. Begun as an amusing diversion during boring meetings, it eventually transformed into an actual novel. The protagonist, a man named Dan, is an obsessive list-maker, and by reading his lists, the story unfolds. It’s different, for sure, and therefore a little scary, but Matthew’s publisher is excited and the response so far has been great.
