microsoftonlineMicrosoft is making a bold entrance into the online computing arena with a limited rollout of online web applications.

The apps will include online versions of MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and OneNote, and will be available for free through Windows Live Skydrive. The apps will not have all the functions of the “regular” versions but will look the same.

This may be Microsoft’s attempt to corner the market before any competitors make much headway into the arena. Google provides Google Docs for free to anyone with a google account, but it is a fairly limited program and not all that useful. Given Microsoft’s entry, it would not be surprising to see a more useful Google Docs in the near future, and perhaps an entry from Apple as well.
