Although those consumer resources are geared towards do-it-yourself legal representation, the lawyer directory lets consumers narrow their search for a lawyer by practice area and location.

Highlights

Lead generation. Nolo gets leads from potential clients that visit websites on the Martindale-Nolo Legal Marketing network, consisting of Martindale-Hubbell, Nolo, and Lawyers.com. Nolo states that over 100,000 visitors to those sites request legal help, and Nolo provides leads, filtered by practice area and location, to directory members. Both exclusive and shared leads are offered.

Articles. Members of Nolo’s lawyer directory can write articles for Nolo, which may increase your visibility to potential clients.

Cross-platform display. A Nolo profile is also displayed on Martindale-Hubbell, a lawyer rating service, and Lawyers.com, a large legal directory.

Additional websites. Nolo owns a number of other websites, including criminaldefenselawyer.com, personalinjurylawyer.com, and usimmigrationlawyers.com. Each of those websites has a launch page, tailored to that practice area, that asks the consumer to specify their issue and location and search for a lawyer.

Pricing

Nolo has two types of memberships. You’ll need to contact Nolo for specific pricing information on both.

The profile membership gives you a listing in Nolo’s lawyer directory and a profile that can include photos, videos, a resume, articles, case history, and more. You can publish articles, and potential clients can contact you directly from your profile or your articles. The profile membership is a flat annual fee.

The premium advertising option allows you to receive leads emailed to you in real time. It also location-targets results, displaying your firm’s information more prominently to consumers located near you. The pricing for premium advertising is highly variable, but Nolo has a proposal generator that will allow you to see expected lead volumes and case submissions from consumers to build a premium subscription that suits you.

Who Nolo is For

The broad reach of Nolo’s multiple websites is appealing for lawyers that work in the types of practice areas that consumers search for by name, such as personal injury and criminal defense. Nolo is also a good choice for lawyers looking to build their online presence by writing articles in their areas of expertise.

    Unfair

    I am an attorney/customer. Their lead referral system is unfair. For example, if you receive a lead from a prospective client and you call the number provided by Martindale/Nolo and the number belongs to someone else, the company will not provide you a refund unless the same caller picks up and speaks to Martindale/Nolo to confirm. There are several ways Martindale/Nolo can address the issue. They could start by requiring any prospective client to provide their phone number and text message verification. This way, the phone numbers can be verified immediately before the customer calls a client. (The leads are also very poor. The description for my last lead simply said something like: thanks for the chat. No offense, but the potential lead doesn’t even seem like s/he is inquiring for services).
