Tabs3 is desktop-based Windows-only timekeeping and billing software designed just for law firms. With certain add-ons, it supports electronic billing formats like LEDES.

Highlights

Billing flexibility. Because it is designed for lawyers, Tabs3 accommodates most legal billing styles. You can bill by a standard hourly rate and customize for each partner or associate. You can also use contingency, split fee, flat fee, task-based, and retainer billing methods.

Extensive reports. Tabs3 will let you run reports showing your top clients, your work-in-progress so you can have an idea of unbilled work, client ledgers, and more.

Seamless integration with other Tabs3 products. Tabs3 makes several products that are designed to connect to Tabs3 Billing, including their own financial and accounting software and custom report writing software. This means that you can make Tabs3 as extensive or limited as you’d like, depending on how many other products you decide to use.

Pricing

Tabs3 has two pricing options. If you opt to pay a yearly fee, your cost is roughly the following (Tabs3 only provides an estimate of yearly pricing on their website):

  • $415/year for one user
  • $675/year for a multi-user license
  • $950/year for the Platinum version of Tabs3

If you opt to pay a monthly fee, Tabs3 costs $40/month/user. They also offer a free trial.

Things You Might Want To Know

Migration. Tabs3 provides a conversion tool to transfer your information from Timeslips to Tabs3. (Former Timeslips users also get a 15% discount for switching). They also provide custom conversions from other software, but you have to contact them to get a quote for that.

Security. Because you install Tabs3 locally on your own machine, you control how secure the data is. At the Platinum level of Tabs3, you can use their encryption utility to encrypt your data locally. If you’re using Tabs3 Connect to access your data on your phone or tablet, transmissions are SSL encrypted.

Apps and integrations. Tabs3 Billing integrates with other Tabs3 programs like Tabs3 General Ledger, Tabs3 Cost Recovery, and Tabs3 Trust Accounting. It also integrates with QuickBooks. It is tightly integrated with Tab3’s law practice management software, Practice Master. Tabs3 does not have an app for iOS or Android. In order to access Tabs3 when you are on your smartphone or tablet, you will have to upgrade to Tabs3 Premium and use Tabs3 Connect, a mobile interface.

Who Tabs3 Is For

If you know you will be continuing to use Windows desktops for the foreseeable future and don’t need a full-featured mobile app, Tabs3 may be a good choice. It’s robust and customizable and will give you an excellent overview of your firm’s performance. However, that level of customization is complicated and comes at a cost, as you likely need to hire a consultant to help you exploit the full potential of the software, which makes it an unlikely choice for solo lawyers.
