In this week’s edition of How Lawyers Work, we talked to Barron Henley. Barron is one of the founding partners of Affinity Consulting Group, a national legal technology consulting firm which handles all aspects of law practice automation including document assembly, case management, document management, legal accounting software, and trial presentation/litigation support.
What apps or tools are essential to your daily workflow?
Dell XPS notebook, Word, Outlook, Excel, ActionStep, HotDocs, Nuance PowerPDF Advanced, Dashlane Password Manager, Skype for Business. I don’t like apps because I’m not interested in staring at a tiny screen or being constantly distracted by notifications on my phone.
What does your workspace look like?
Treadmill desk on the left; sit-down desk on the right. I never turn on the overhead lights in my office so it’s generally dark, which is how I like it.
How do you keep track of your calendars/deadlines?
Outlook/Exchange and Wunderlist.
What’s your coffee service setup? (Other beverages are fine, of course, but you should really be serving coffee!)
Starbucks whole bean which we grind for each pot. We have a Kinetico K5 Drinking Water Station for the water, and we use some fancy Italian coffee maker with a thermal carafe so the coffee doesn’t get burned.
What is one thing that you listen to/read/watch that everyone should?
I read at least one newspaper/spend 30 minutes reading through stories on CNN.com/listen to an hour of NPR in the morning so I’m aware of what’s going on in the world.
What’s your favorite local place to network or work solo?
I don’t like company or background noise when I have to work on things that require many hours of focused concentration, so my favorite place to work is at my home office in total silence. Unfortunately, as a partner and leader in my company, I need to be at the office if at all possible (because none of our Columbus employees work from home) so I don’t get to work from home very often.
What are three things you do without fail every day?
(1) Kiss my wife, (2) drink at least 1 large cup of coffee, and (3) cook at least one meal (if I’m not on the road).
