Super Lawyers, run by Thomson Reuters, is a lawyer rating service and directory. It covers over 70 practice areas and selects lawyers for inclusion on the list through a combination of peer nominations, peer evaluations, and independent research. Super Lawyers also has a rating service, Rising Stars, for lawyers who are under 40 or have practiced less than 10 years.

Peer-driven selection process. Lawyers can only be included in the Super Lawyers directory via a multi-step process. First, an attorney must be nominated by peers, with preference given to nominations put forth by individuals outside your firm. You can’t nominate yourself. Super Lawyers also performs research and puts forth some of its own nominations. After nominations are received, Super Lawyers researches things like the verdicts and settlements that attorney has achieved, any other honors and awards they might have won, their bar activity, their scholarly writings, and more. After that, a peer selection panel helps narrow the candidates further. Finally, candidates are grouped into firm size categories, so that solo and small attorneys will only compete with other solo and small attorneys for inclusion on the list.

Multiple advertising channels. If you are selected as a Super Lawyer, there are a number of ways you can highlight your achievement and advertise your services. Super Lawyers has a print magazine where you can pay for everything from inclusion in the print lawyer directory to a display ad to a full-page platinum profile. In the digital realm, you can purchase a premium online attorney profile. With a premium profile, Super Lawyers will write and search engine optimize your biography. There are additional digital advertising options, such as TopSpot, which provides top placement in your location and practice area and ensures you appear on every directory search result.

Ask a Super Lawyer. After being named a Super Lawyer, you can sign up to answer state-specific questions about legal issues within your practice area.

There is no cost to be selected as a Super Lawyer or Rising Star. However, there are variable charges for the additional advertising opportunities, and you can contact Thomson Reuters for complete pricing information.

Who Super Lawyers is For

Super Lawyers membership is limited to 5 percent of the lawyers in each state while Rising Star membership is limited to 2.5 percent. Thanks to the broad reach of Thomson Reuters and the ubiquity of the Super Lawyers print edition, peers and colleagues are often aware of someone’s appearance on the list. Additionally, the advertising opportunities inclusion on the list unlocks are substantial. Attorneys in competitive practice areas and competitive geographic markets will benefit from inclusion on the list, should they have the peer recognition and accomplishments to do so.
