SmartAdvocate Highlights

Texting Integration. Through its MessageMedia integration, you can send text messages—en masse or directly to individual clients—from the software’s interface. Any incoming texts or images from clients are automatically saved in the client’s case file.

Bar Code Scanning. You can generate and print out custom barcodes for cases to use as a cover sheet when scanning documents. This way, documents can be automatically attached to the case file when they are scanned. This feature is only available on the server version.

Client Portal. You can give your clients access to their case file through the online client portal option. Clients sign up for the client portal, and you can select which files they can view through the portal.

Things You Might Want to Know

Training and Support. Initial training and certain technical support is not included with the purchase price of the software and will have to be purchased separately. That’s a big difference from most other practice management software solutions.

Mobile App. Mobile apps are available for both iOS and Android, though the mobile apps do not offer the browser interface’s full capabilities.

Integrations. The software features a lot of helpful integrations, including a Medical Records Service integration, a Calendar Rules integration that automatically populates deadlines for briefs, motions, etc., into your calendar, and a QuickBooks integration. Many of these integrations come at additional cost from the vendor and in customized integration costs.

Security. If you use SmartAdvocate’s server version, security is your own responsibility because you host the software on your own in-house server. If you use the cloud-hosted version, SmartAdvocate uses HTTPS encryption, which is similar to what banks use.

Browser Based. You access the software through Internet Explorer or Chrome, not a separate application. This allows you to have multiple tabs of SmartAdvocate open at once, which is a nice option if you’re a fan of the tab revolution.

SmartAdvocate has many features and many integrations. For lawyers and law firms looking to customize their dashboard and management to their exact needs, SmartAdvocate may be a viable option. It is probably best suited for personal injury attorneys and larger law firms, especially due to its price point.
