I am thrilled to join an impressive group of writers at Lawyerist! I am a Chicago-based attorney and marketing consultant, and I am passionate about independent music, art, social media, legal technology and intellectual property.

I grew up in the Mississippi Delta and Memphis, and I graduated from the University of Mississippi with a B.A. in journalism and public relations.  While in college, I was active in the local arts scene as a music journalist and creative non-fiction writer.  As a writer and a lover of creative works, I became fascinated with intellectual property and finding ways to support up-and-coming artists.

On the night I took the LSAT, I met a group of talented jazz musicians who were playing in the horn section for Wilco on their tour through Memphis.  One of these musicians introduced me to DePaul’s Center for Intellectual Property and Information Technology, so after college, I headed to Chicago for law school.  During law school, I was a summer associate for Lawyers for the Creative Arts and the Entertainment Law Office, as well as an intern for the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.  After law school, I took a brief detour and became executive associate to the president at Total Attorneys, where I honed my skills in marketing communications and social media.  Now, I work as a solo practice attorney with a focus on the legal needs of up-and-coming musicians and artists, and I act as a marketing consultant for small businesses and law firms.

I find that while musicians are generally great at marketing themselves via social media, they need a lot of handholding and education when it comes to managing their business and intellectual property. Conversely, professionals often know how to manage their offices, but they don’t always know how to market their law firms through new media or show off their personalities.  I believe that success relies on talent and good business practices, as well as personality and social outreach; and my goal is to fill in the gaps for both artists and professionals.

As a fellow Ole Miss alum, let me say, “Welcome, Kate!”

    “Welcome, Kate!”

    There, I’ve said it.

All joking aside, your name is familiar. Makes me wonder if we were on the campus at the same time.
