I think I’m on record somewhere as saying you shouldn’t spend less than $1,000 on a laptop — and I stand by that. But if you like buying pokey machines you will have to replace in a couple of years, the Wirecutter recommends the HP Pavilion g6t-2000, which is just $499. And it’s not bad, really. The g6t-2000 is a lot of bang for your buck, even considering the bulk (5.46 lbs) and low-grade or out-of-date parts (of course, all the laptops in this category are heavy and filled with low-grade and out-of-date parts).
