In this week’s edition of How Lawyers Work, we talked to Aaron Thomas. Aaron is a family law attorney in Atlanta, Georgia. He began his career as an in-house staff attorney for Habitat for Humanity and then worked as a public defender. Since 2007, Aaron has practiced family law exclusively.

What apps or tools are essential to your daily workflow?

MacBook and iPhone 7 PlusThings, Slack, Rocket Matter, Gmail, Notes, and Microsoft 365. iPad Pro for court.

What does your workspace look like?

I have two workspaces: one in my home office, and one at work, that look almost identical. Dell 24” HD monitor, Rain Design M-stand to hold my MacBook, Bluetooth keyboard, and Magic trackpad, with a printer and, of course, the indispensable ScanSnap ix500.

How do you keep track of your calendars and deadlines?

I have a shared calendar through Mac’s stock Calendar app that my paralegal and I use to keep dates and deadlines. I also use Slack to track my paralegal’s to-do list, and Cultured Code’s Things for my own task management, which pulls in my events from the calendar as well.

What is your coffee service setup?

(Other beverages are fine, of course, but we think you should really be serving coffee!)

OXO 9-cup coffee maker at home is the best coffeemaker I’ve ever owned, and when I’m on the go, I use the Zojirushi Stainless Thermal Mug, also the best I’ve ever had. Coffee is a daily necessity.

What is one thing that you listen to, read, or watch that everyone should?

Outside of the Lawyerist and other law-related podcasts, I listen to The Tim Ferriss Show and NPR’s How I Built This for inspiration.

What is your favorite local place to network or work solo?

Besides my home office for working, I try to schedule as many networking lunches at Atlanta’s Ponce City Market which has virtually unlimited delicious things to eat and drink.

What are three things you do without fail every day?

Meditation via Headspace, Spanish practice in Duolingo, and write at least 250 words towards some project or another—every day, including weekends.
