LawPay is a payment processor designed especially for law firms. The software allows you to accept credit card payments and set up recurring payments and integrates with several law practice management software programs.

Trust account compliant. The ABA Code of Professional Conduct and many state bars have guidelines on trust accounting that requires attorneys to ensure client funds are not commingled, but this can be a problem when clients pay with a credit card thanks to credit card fees. LawPay separates client credit card transactions automatically and deposits any unearned fees, retainers or advances into the firm’s trust account. However, only the highest tier of LawPay’s plans will do this for you.

Dashboard. Their dashboard allows you to get a comprehensive view of all your transactions and will let you run custom reports. This allows you to track your processing volume and payment trends.

Payment button. LawPay provides you with a snippet of code so you can place a payment button on your website and accept payments directly through your site.

LawPay has both a monthly fee and a per-transaction fee.

  • The Fixed Plan is $5/month. All credit cards transactions have a 3.5% fee. With the Fixed Plan, you can only deposit funds in your operating account.
  • The Standard Plan is $15/month. Visa, Discover, and Mastercard have a 1.95% fee per transaction, and specialty cards (like AmEx or corporate cards) have a 2.95% fee per transaction. The Standard Plan also charges an additional 20 cents/transaction.  With the Standard Plan, you can deposit funds in their entirety in your trust or operating account.
  • The Trust Plan is $20/month. Visa, Discover, and Mastercard have a 1.95% fee per transaction, and specialty cards (like AmEx or corporate cards) have a 2.95% fee per transaction. The Trust Plan also charges an additional 20 cents/transaction. With the Trust Plan, you can split your deposited funds between your trust and operating accounts.
