Do Lawyers Need Smartphones?

A recent survey by the ABA Legal Technology Resource Center indicates that more and more attorneys are using smartphones as part of their practice. If you still have not jumped on board, here are some reasons why.

Your office is now portable

The advantage to a smartphone is that you can maintain your practice while on the move. You can check and respond to emails. If you use Skype, you can still answer calls while out of the office. If you use Dropbox, you can access your client files outside of the office.

Clients may demand faster responses

The increase utilization of smartphones has increased client expectations in terms of response times and availability. How fast you respond to emails depends on your area of law and what your clients expect. For many firms, attorneys are expected to have their Blackberries at the ready 24/7 and respond quickly to client emails.

If your firm policy requires quick responses to emails, having a smartphone at the ready is much easier than lugging around a laptop. Even if you only occasionally need to emails while out of the office, a smartphone will get the job done.

Lots of utility with not much hassle

Smartphones do lots of other “non-office” type things. If you are maintaining a social media campaign, including a blog, you can do it all from your phone. When you are sitting on the subway, or the bus, you can read other lawyer blogs, write your own posts, or even review a motion you received the night before.

If you find yourself traveling for work, your phone probably has a map or GPS system, which can prevent you from getting lost, or being late for court. There is no right or wrong way to use a smart phone. For the most part, however, using a smartphone for work should make things easier.
