The Fujitsu ScanSnap S1500 is “made for” Windows, and the S1500M is “made for” Mac. What that really means is that they are different colors and ship with the appropriate version of Acrobat.

However, if you switch from Windows to Mac, you may not want to buy a new scanner. Easy enough; you just need the Mac version of ScanSnap Manager, and your S1500 (no M necessary) will work just fine. You don’t even need a copy of Acrobat, I suppose because a Mac has PDF support built-in.

  • I’ll be curious to hear how you’ve managed without Acrobat on the new Mini. I have been using the Scansnap S1500 I purchased for my Windows environment with my Macs since the summer but have not upgraded from the Free Acrobat reader.

I have missed the full version of Acrobat but haven’t sucked it up to purchase Pro for Mac as of yet. Preview handles many of the Acrobat tasks as well as Acrobat but not others.

The most frustrating part of not having the full version of Acrobat is the ability to merge pages from one PDF to another. This is helpful with signature pages so that if I have the document saved, I can simply scan the signature page and with Acrobat they can be simply dragged and dropped into the original doc. Now I save the signature page as a separate doc, which isn’t the end of the world, but its not the way I want it.

Preview also handles many of the ‘fill-in’ forms I use regularly, but there are quirks that prevent me from completing some. Haven’t decided if this is a $300 problem to justify purchasing the full version of Acrobat.

    • I do have Acrobat for Mac, but I haven’t bothered to install it, yet. I was just pleasantly surprised to find that ScanSnap Manager works fine without it.

I use Acrobat mainly for three things: editing PDFs (including combining files), adding stamps (document production, for example), and creating fill-in forms. I don’t do those things a lot, but I do them enough that I’ll eventually install the Mac version.

Ugh. After four years of read, lurking in the shadows, I made my first comment on Lawyerist (or any blog for that matter) and failed to thread it properly. Thomas, please see my response about merging PDFs below.

Thomas, you can merge pages of independent PDFs in Preview. If you open both files and select a view that shows thumbnails, you can drag the thumbnail of the page(s) you want to move to the location that you want them to drop. A green circle with a plus sign will show up when its safe to drop the files. Make sure you see the circle or you’ll end up just opening separate files in one window.

I hope I understood your concern, and this was of some help.

    • That is EXACTLY what I was looking for, thanks Jen. I at one point attempted to figure that out and then never got back to it so thank you for the tip!

I still think I will end up purchasing Acrobat Pro, but that is very useful while I continue to try to scrape together enough nickels to foot the bill.

I have a mac and Pc. Should I buy the pc version of the Scansnap? It sounds like that version works with both platforms — but, not the other way around.

    • The scanners are identical. The software is different. Get the version for the system you want to use it with. But yeah, since you can get by without Acrobat on the Mac, at least, you might be better off with the PC version.

I have had the ScanSnap for a couple of years. I am now switching over to a Mac Pro. I have the download file on the Mac & when I double click the S icon I get this message, “The Profile menu is disabled while Quick menu is in use”. I have read how to turn the Profile menu off through the ScanSnap preferences but every time I get the same message. Any help??
