4-Step Computer Security Upgrade

Learn to encrypt your files, secure your computer when using public Wi-Fi, enable two-factor authentication, and use good passwords.

It’s been about four years since I upgraded any of my computers, which feels like forever. But I wonder if that means I’m using hardware that matches up with the majority of our readers. How often do you upgrade?

Our desktop computers are all custom built, so most years we do a small upgrade (RAM, etc). Every other year or so we’ll upgrade the motherboard/CPU. The last full upgrade on our machines was probably 6 years ago.

Our laptop upgrade cycle is about every 4 years.

Custom built desktop (DIY 2012), four year old laptop. Upgraded the laptop with a new battery and hybrid drive pending Haswell’s release next year. I keep telling myself I’ll upgrade to an ultrabook then, but I have no complaints with the current laptop.

Upgraded my paralegal’s 17″ laptop/desktop 3 years ago. The motherboard on my laptop burned out about a year ago & I replaced it with a iPad 2. Best move I ever made. My paralegal’s laptop is used as a server as well as as her computer. So far no problems. I am searching for a cloud based SAAS practice management program.
Would appreciate your thoughts and/ or comments on this.

I’m writing this glorious comment from a desktop I built for bitcoin mining a while back. It’s got 9GB ram and windows 7. I don’t plan on upgrading any time soon, in fact I’m leaning towards an iMac. My home PC is about 2 years old but runs like a beast so I probably won’t touch it for a while.

  • My plan is to replace my main computer every 3 years regardless of its condition (which means I’m due for another replacement before year end). A computer is a lawyer’s primary work tool. It probably costs less than 1% of the revenue the lawyer produces and it will likely last for 3 years. The downtime from a sudden crash of an old computer is much more expensive. Plus, the old computer can be used as an emergency back up if something goes wrong with the new one.

I’m writing this comment on my 10 year old mac! Yes, a little embarrassed about it, but she’s done me well. :) As lovely as she is, she’s been slowing down my productivity, so plan on making a upgrade this year with hopes of upgrading every 2-3 years in the future.
