Google+ just launched its new Pages feature, allowing brands, companies, institutions, and other organizations to proclaim their presence to the world on Google+, which is essentially Google’s combined version of Facebook and Twitter.
Since there is now a rush to get onto Google+ and claim your business’s name, I am going to walk you through the setup process so you can have your firm or practice set up in just a matter of minutes. Just follow the steps below and ask any questions in the comments, and you will be set up in a few minutes.
1. Getting Started. Start by going to the Google+ Pages site. Strangely, this brings you back to the same page where you would create a personal account. Don’t worry—you’ll get to choose your type of page soon enough.
2. Enter your name and click the “Join” button. You will then go through two screens asking you to add friends and follow celebrities. You can do what you like here. After these pages you will choose what type of page you want.
3. Pick a Category. Here you can choose among Local Business; Product or Brand; Company, Institution or Organization; Arts, Entertainment or Sports; and the notorious “Other.” I chose Company, Institution or Organization.
4. Enter your firm’s information on the right, consisting of your firm’s name and website. Then select “Legal” from the first drop-down box, and choose who your content is appropriate for in the second drop-down box. I would advise you to make it available to any Google+ user unless you have very touchy or risqué information to post on your page.
5. Click the two check boxes, and click the “Create” button, and you’ve created your page! Now you need to customize it.
6. Customizing. Come up with a tagline of 10 words or less to describe your firm. If you already have one, great; if not, add something for now, knowing that you can always change it later. I think shorter is usually better. Then add a picture either of yourself or your firm’s logo and click “Continue.”
7. Get the Word Out. If you already added people to your Circles in the pages noted in Step 2 (above), then you will have people with whom to share the fact that you have a new page up on Google+. When you are done notifying your friends, click the “Finish” button.
And that’s it! You are all set up. At this point you will need to customize your page, of course, adding content and building a page people will want to keep visiting.
