What Should Law Students Ask During OCI Interviews?

At law schools across the country, OCI madness is in full force. If you did not get selected for any OCI interviews, there are other options to consider.

If you did land some interviews, however, remember you are also interviewing the firm to see if it is a good fit for you. When you are asked if you have any questions, make them count.

Ask specific questions about the firm and its attorneys

Talk to your schools career development office and find out who was a summer clerk last year. Track down those students and interrogate them. They can give you insight on what the program is like and what the interviewers are looking for. They might be able to tell you who is likely to interview you, which can be extremely helpful.

Read about the firm on their website and get a feel from their different practice areas, at a minimum. Browse the bios of the attorneys, as you might remember something interesting from their bio if that attorney happens to interview you. For example, you might be able to ask an interviewer about a recent case they worked on or an article they wrote.

Find out if the firm is a good fit for your goals

Ask questions that will help you figure out what the firm experience is like for young attorneys. Ask the attorneys what they spend their first year working on. Ask about the ability to move to a different practice area. Can you expect to have a partner mentor you, or will you be working with a variety of partners?

If you want to litigate, inquire how you quickly you can expect to see a courtroom. For the most part, you can expect that the interviewing attorneys will be quite candid in their responses.

If you are seriously considering the firm as a long-term fit, ask questions that signal that interest. Remember, the goal is to find out if the firm is the right fit for you.
