Podcast #75: Building a Mindful Law Practice, with Jeena Cho

This week, Sam talks to Jeena Cho about her new book, The Anxious Lawyer, and how to build a mindful law practice.

Red Herrings and USB Condoms

Aaron recently read an article noting that the majority of Supreme Court justices are millionaires, a fact which caused some consternation that the justices were out of touch. However, Aaron pointed out that this was a bit of a red herring, as likely the vast majority of successful lawyers aged 65 to 85 would probably have a net worth of at least a million dollars. Indeed, most middle- and upper-middle-class individuals would likely have that sum, at least on paper, when including all assets such as retirement savings. Now, if the majority of justices were billionaires, that would be out of touch.

Sam ran across a tweet that talked about a picture of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg. In the photo, you can see that Zuckerberg has placed tape over his computer’s camera and microphone, presumably as a security precaution. It is possible for people to hack your computer and turn on your camera and microphone, though it is a relatively sophisticated hack. It’s also possible to transmit viruses via a USB port. With that in mind, Sam recently purchased a SyncStop aka a USB condom. The SyncStop prevents any data exchange when you plug your USB device into a charger or another computer. Data is blocked, but power isn’t. Much like putting a piece of tape over your camera, it is a relatively quick and easy way to make your computer more secure.
