One of the greatest challenges I have when looking at my wardrobe is what I call outfit tunnel vision. I get stuck in thinking that a certain pant, shirt or skirt can only go with another certain pant, skirt or shirt-kind of like an adult Garanaimals. This results in having very few outfit combinations for my entire wardrobe. In reality there are unlimited ways to wear almost any item of clothing (swimsuits and undergarments excluded) and adapt it to any season. Dress for Success
There are now 12 days until Christmas (and nearing the end of Chanukah) and while the internet is full of “12 days of gifts” lists and “gift ideas for everyone on your list” or what I call the “here-are ridiculously-expensive-things-no-one-actually-buys” lists. Last year I wrote a fail-safe gift guide for the men in your life (and I support the robotic vacuum idea more than ever) but this year I’m taking a slightly different approach to these days before Christmas.
I tend to be somewhat anti-Christmas(or whichever winter holiday you celebrate) until Thanksgiving is over, I believe that each holiday should be given its own celebration period. I give kudos to stores like Nordstrom who held off on their holiday decorations until after Turkey Day and radio stations who didn’t switch to Christmas music until Black Friday. Now that Thanksgiving is over I have fully transformed into a grinch watching, peppermint mocha sipping, tree trimming crazy. My enthusiasm about Christmas also comes out in my dress; sparkly nails, crisp whites, deep reds, and rich greens. While you could rock that reindeer sweater complete with puffballs to illustrate your holiday spirit, there is a far more chic option to show your holiday spirit: tartan.
Nothing makes me feel more confident or put together than a great pair of heels but some days donning a pair of heels just isn’t appealing. Ballet flats are a staple in my wardrobe but they get boring fast. Luckily, the fall runways have brought a new crop of sole-friendly shoes to give your faithful flats a break. The classic smoking slipper has been reinvented to fit a more polished look, see how to wear it after the jump.

It has been well established by the fashion (and the practical) world that once the air turns crisp and cool, boots are a wardrobe must. It doesn’t matter if they are short booties, knee high riding boots or wellies, boots are found in every style and on almost every female individual (unfortunately it seems half of these are still Uggs). I love boots and own more pairs than I have space to keep them. It is rare that during the cold months you will find me in anything but boots in my spare time but work is an entirely different issue.
The winter of my 2L year I attended the National Environmental Law Moot Court Competition. At this time I was not participating but observing some 3L’s in preparation for the next year. The first day of the competition I wore my winter white Theory suit. I had purchased it months ago and was so excited to finally wear it, the snowy muddy ground be damned. I paired it with a navy silk shell and burgundy patent Dior heels (sounds much more patriotic than it was) and it looked phenomenal. It was crisp, clean, perfectly tailored and I loved it…but I looked like a lost penguin among a pack of sea lions.
Offices can wildly vary on dress codes, some are business casual Saturday and Sunday while others feel more like you’re walking into a Best Buy than a law firm, government office, or non-profit. However your office operates, one thing that seems constant is the idea of casual Friday. Casual Friday sounds easy but it can sometimes be difficult to gauge exactly what is appropriate casual dressing. Read on for a few tips on how to dress down while still looking like you’re moving up.
It is my personal belief that fall is not only the best season due to the crisp air and pumpkin spice latte’s but it also the optimal season for fashion. Cool mornings and temperate days lends itself perfectly to layering. Fall also invites a plethora of colors and textures that just make you feel cozy: tweeds, dark plums, rich reds, leather, chunky knits, soft grays, and warm wool. One of the standout colors for fall is Burgundy and this season’s pieces will make you forget all about the pastels and brights you rocked all summer.
Jessica Perason has one of my dream work wardrobes. Everything she wears is polished, crisp, and perfectly tailored. Her clothes are feminine yet incredibly powerful. Unfortunately she does not exist, at least not that I know of. Jessica Pearson is a character on the show Suits, played by Gina Torres and her character illustrates how the right dress can be as polished and formal as a traditional suit.
It is a dreary, rainy (finally, the grass is so happy!) day here in DC. The gray sky combined with the fact that the weekend is here makes for a day where I am highly unmotivated to get dressed at all. Since a full on birthday suit is frowned upon in the workplace (well, at least my workplace) I decided to utilize one of a few fail-safe tricks to create an outfit without even trying (and share with you the rest).
