Dress for Success

The weather here in DC seems to have finally sorted itself out and warm, sunny days are here to stay. Warmer weather not only brings barbecues, softball games, and patio brunches but sundresses, flip flops, mini skirts and wayfarers. The sun also brings a shift in the female work wardrobe (sorry boys, short sleeve dress shirts will never be appropriate, or even acceptable). While it is tempting to rotate in all your warm weather garments there are some pieces that should never be worn to the office.

Everyone has those days where they stare into their closet and say that they have nothing to wear. I know I do this from time to time even though my closet is literally bursting with clothes. Sometimes I feel like I have nothing to wear just because I want something new but other times it is because I feel I have nothing appropriate for that day or occasion. In order to avoid this problem in your professional wardrobe there are 10 must have items that you should own. These pieces serve as a reliable foundation that you can build upon with trendier items.

The classic oxford shirt is an office staple and pairing it with a pencil skirt is a fail safe outfit. However, it can be quite boring wearing the same type of outfit day in and day out. Here are 5 ways to keep the oxford/pencil skirt combination fresh and fun.

I remember watching my first runway show (from my couch, unfortunately) and wondering to myself who would actually wear these things in real life. The show was by the late Alexander McQueen and one particular model had a mesh cage surrounding her filled with live butterflies, I was completely bewildered. Runway looks can be awe-inspiring and intimidating at the same time but there is always a way to incorporate the trend into your wardrobe.

I was once in the dressing room of a store and a girl told the tailor to hem her pants to an in-between length so she could wear them with flats or heels. I cringed. A frequent fashion error that women (and men) make is wearing pants that are improper lengths. If they are too long it can look messy and ill-fitting while too short can cut off leg lines and look choppy. The correct pant length can be attained by following these three rules.

Trench coats are always in style but this spring has brought a complete refresh of the classic coat. The buttoned up and classy coat has been updated in bright shades, fun patterns, and even color blocking. A trench coat is great for the late winter-early spring transition, where it’s too warm for a winter coat but chilly enough for a substantial jacket.

The Burberry trench is the quintessential coat and I highly recommend making the investment if you can. (If so, splurge for the version with the removable fleece lining, you’ll thank yourself on sleet-filled days). However, Burberry is no longer the only option in great trench coats. Trench coats should be fitted but not snug. When looking for a trench also keep in mind your height. If you are on the shorter side look for a coat that hits above the knee by a few inches and below the hip by a few inches. Polish off your spring ensembles with this timeless piece.

I was recently watching an episode of The New Girl and there was a scene where Julia, a lawyer, was representing the quirky and colorful Jess (Zooey Deschanel) for an LA traffic ticket. Julia was wearing a blank pantsuit with a burgundy cotton tank top and I commented out loud (to myself) not only how boring a cotton shirt looks under a suit but also how unprofessional it can be. (Luckily, Jess felt the same way and during an emotional rant to Julia commented on how her outfit could be just a little bit cuter.)

When people walk into my bedroom their first reaction always seems to be “you have so many shoes!” It is true, I have a major shoe addiction and my collection takes up more space in my room than my furniture (a fact I’m completely okay with). My collection runs from worn-down leopard ballet flats to pristine Dior stilettos to Old Navy dessert wedges. Some I wear once a year, some  I wear every other day. There are irrefutably a few pairs that are wardrobe staples that I think every woman should own. For each one I would recommend sticking with the classic stiletto shape , closed toe, and standard 3.5″ heel. These will be classic anchor pieces for your shoe collection and will be appropriate no matter the current trends.

There are few things I have a more emotional attachment to than my beard. I’ve had facial hair on and off since I was old enough to grow a goatee, but now that I’m a professional and I spend my time interacting with the public, I’ve noticed that not everyone has the same respect for beards that I do. It seems that a few bad apples out there are making all of the other men with facial hair look bad. So today I’m here to make sure you aren’t one of those bad apples.

I’m not sure how crazy the weather has been in other parts of the country but here in DC we went from sunny and gorgeous to cold, wet snow in less than 48 hours. Since it is January there will be many more dreary days ahead. When the weather is consistently bleak and the sky a depressing shade of grey I find myself trying to combat these downers in a variety of ways; baking, kickboxing class, evening-long happy hours, and with my closet.
