3 Places For Lawyers To Be and Be Seen On the Web

by Gyi Tsakalakis on February 1, 2010

How you publish your online content is almost as important as creating it. That is where legal content platforms come into play.

As new legal content platforms continue to spring up, it becomes challenging for busy lawyers to decide where to allocate their online time. However, participating on these legal portals is some of the most effective marketing available. Here are three that we routinely recommend to our clients:

Avvo

Avvo allows you to claim a free lawyer profile. With your profile, you can display helpful information including your experience, areas of practice, disciplinary history, and ratings from clients. Even better, Avvo provides a “content network” which allows lawyers to post answers to questions, post articles and legal guides, and other useful information for consumers. Avvo has an upgraded offering that runs $50/month.

Avvo also rates every attorney, based on a proprietary algorithm. While we are not overly keen on their rating system, posting content here is a great way to get exposure to your target audience and build your professional network.

ExpertHub

ExpertHub prides itself on being built upon leading-edge open source technology. One place that ExpertHub truly exceeds is their reporting dashboard. Measuring the performance of your online efforts is the only way to prioritize where you spend your online time and how much time to allocate. From a search engine standpoint, ExpertHub’s profile management interface is probably the best around. At around $30/month, ExpertHub is one of our favorite places to market our clients.

JD Supra

JD Supra lets you create an online portfolio of your legal articles, newsletters, alerts, court filings, and presentations. They also help you get noticed by prospective clients, colleagues and the media. JD Supra creates a substantial, easily referenced, online archive of your expertise. Somewhat different from other platforms, JD Supra allows you to upload your documents in various formats including Word and PDF. You can post filings, decisions, articles, newsletters, blog entries, presentations, media coverage.

A basic profile and document posting can be implemented for free. For example, here is my profile on JD Supra. As you will notice, I do not currently have a paid listing. However, a paid listing provides several advantages including contact information and a link to your website, among others. Paid accounts range from $45-$150 / month.

In my humble opinion, each of the above platforms are a must-do for building a strong web presence for your firm.
