Microsoft Word AutoRecover + Dropbox = Extra Peace of Mind

word autorecover 150x150 Microsoft Word AutoRecover + Dropbox = Extra Peace of MindThis tip is a no-brainer. Do it now! In Word (or Excel or PowerPoint), go to File > Options > Save, and set the Save AutoRecover information to every 1 minute.

Then, set the AutoRecover file location to a location in your Dropbox (click the image to see my file path).

Voila! Now your AutoRecover files will be synced up with Dropbox so you can get them back if they disappear from your hard drive.

This tip is good, but only if you don’t edit any files with sensitive client information in them. Dropbox is insecure… http://daringfireball.net/linked/2011/06/21/dropbox-authentication

The “insecurity” you link to was short-lived, and fixed fairly transparently. It’s a reason to trust Dropbox, not to ditch it.

The other Dropbox “exploits” that occasionally surface require someone to have physical access to your computer as well as access to your files. If they have access to your files, they don’t need a silly Dropbox “exploit;” they can just copy your files to a USB drive.

Any “exploit” is a generally red herring if it requires someone to have physical access to your computer and access to your files.
