But did you know? You can actually use the internet to meet new people IRL. It’s true. And sites like Meetup can help.

About Meetup:

Meetup is the world’s largest network of local groups. Meetup makes it easy for anyone to organize a local group or find one of the thousands already meeting up face-to-face. More than 9,000 groups get together in local communities each day, each one with the goal of improving themselves or their communities.

Meetup’s mission is to revitalize local community and help people around the world self-organize. Meetup believes that people can change their personal world, or the whole world, by organizing themselves into groups that are powerful enough to make a difference.

It’s completely free to join Meetup. They don’t charge members to create an account, join a group, or attend Meetups. However, some Organizers charge dues and event fees.

Meet Up With Other Lawyers

You don’t have to search very hard to find meet ups for lawyers all over the world. Rocket Lawyer has a nice round-up of Meetup groups aimed at attorneys and legal professionals.

Of course, you can also just start your own Meetup. You might also consider finding a sponsor for your Meetup to provide food & drinks.

Meet Up With Non-lawyers

Don’t limit yourself to Meetups just for lawyers. You can find Meetups:

• Devoted to a particular topic.
• Based on proximity to you.
• With a certain number of members.
• Or based on the amount of activity.

Tips for Meetups

If you’re going to participate in a Meetup, or really any other networking for that matter, you should spend some time preparing:

• Bring business cards.
• Craft your elevator speech.
• Make it clear what you (want to) do.
• Have some goals.
• Being an introvert isn’t an excuse.
• Say hello to people.
• Avoid reeking of effort.
• Volunteer.
• Follow-up with people you meet.

Beyond Meetup.com

Obviously, Meetup.com isn’t the only way to use the internet to meet people in-real-life.

It might come as a surprise, but people are also using Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+ and even Facebook to meet new people in-real-life. That’s right, these platforms can do more than just auto-feed blog posts.

You can also organize and publicize meet-ups on your blog.
