Larger monitors (or second monitors) can be huge productivity enhancers. According to the Wirecutter (a great tech buyers guide, by the way), the best deal on monitors is the Dell UltraSharp U2412M, available for just $283 on Amazon.

That seems like a very nice monitor, but for the same price, I have two 21.5 inch Asus monitors that I love, at $150 each.

As the proud owner of a similarly-priced monitor to yours, I am happy, but cognizant of the benefits of a nicer monitor. Accurate colors would be a nice change.

The price of this monitor has been fluctuating wildly. On Tuesday, it was down to $292, yesterday, it was $349, and now it is $345.

This monitor @ Amazon is currently $340-something with shipping. But you can get it from Dell directly for $329 with free shipping (and a three-year advance replacement warranty): http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&sku=320-2676&dgc=ST&cid=72662&lid=1838870&acd=spla_pl_dhsea:028093,,901pdb6671.

Good to know. The prices on both sites fluctuate quite a bit, so you’ll want to check both before purchasing.

O.K. Slightly better deal: this coupon code gets you 15% off of the list price via Dell Small Business, which works out to $313/each with free shipping (through May 12, 2012, I think): P?F3SSV7VMLXCL

Using two of these in my home office now. They are beautiful monitors, and I really appreciate the extra screen real estate for online researching, proofreading briefs, and client billing. A great investment in my productivity.

I just moved from a laptop setup at work to a desktop, and I am not happy with the change.

We use a terminal server, so there I haven’t lost any files, it is just that my laptop (An acer aspire something-or-other) kinda died. The problem is that the desktop screen I am working on is about half the size of my laptop’s. Plus, my laptop had more processing power than the desktop, so when I am not in the server (IE anything on the net) it really bogs down. I am working on a 36cm screen at the moment; that’s a 14 inch screen on a desktop.

Is there any way to hook up a secondary monitor to a desktop? Mine only has one rear screen port.

In order to hook up a second monitor, you need a video card that supports dual (or more) monitors. It’s not an expensive upgrade, and it’s easy to do yourself.

… or, even easier, just get a larger monitor, unplug the small one, plug in the new one.

Well, yes. There’s that. I’ve had a 22″ monitor for a while, but I think I’d like to upgrade to a 27″ at some point. It’s nice to have the extra real estate.

Update: Doing taxes with two of these monitors is much nicer: various QuickBooks screens/reports open all over the place. Makes an unpleasant task almost bearable!
